Events which brought on change for women to enjoy the freedom they now possessed to wear: shorter skirts, shed a corset, bob their hair, and don a realistic swimsuit, was a result from events such as WW1 and prohibition. World War I really was the turning point for women’s fashion in producing dress reform as a strong discontinuity in the way women dressed. The increasing employment of women in industrial activities had relaxed strict dress codes, and allowed women to wear cotton trousers for the first time. As women’s roles in Western society changed, modern fashion changed along with it. The need for practical clothes diffused into mainstream society, and the use of "poor" materials proliferated. Black, grey, and other neutrals were common colours, as there were lots of widows in mourning.Women wore trousers for the first time, for ease of movement during labour work.
As the war ended, everyone became optimistic and the social morals were relaxed as the strife and stress associated with the war was now over. This resulted in the radical changes in women's fashion being accepted. The return of loved ones had given everyone a renewed hope, causing more inspiration for enjoying life to its fullest, perhaps in fear that this season of goodwill would soon be over. Automobiles, going to cinemas, the great wave of upbeat Jazz which defined its decade and television were in high use never before seen because of such relief. This also blazed the degree of inventions and production using new materials which changed the lifestyle and culture. The brightness and boom of economic confidence was reflected in the vivid colouring and slacking of women's fashion. Easement from the strong curves became a loose tube like dress, which entirely represented the feelings of the time.
The 1920's were also a time of great social revolt and upturning of the previous royalty as the proletariats and the burgeois were more appreciated. The pursuit of women’s rights like the right to vote in Europe and America played a key role in shaping dress reform. They had more liberations, resulting in not having to stay at home all day. They could involve in recreational activities such as tennis and golf and many new models of sportswear especially for women were designed. Regular swimwear revealing legs and arm skin also was due to this act of defiance against King Edward's rule.
It is obvious that WW1 has played an integral role in leading the 1920s to change. The increase an employment has led to the change in fashion to be more flexible and loose. The radical fashion during the 1920s slowly became accepted, and to this day, women have freedom!
